Paver Installation in Tucson, AZ

Patios, driveways, walkways, steps and pool decks. Every one of them built on an excavated and compacted base, because that is the part that decides whether it is still flat in ten years.

The part you cannot see

Laying pavers is the last two days of the job

Everyone photographs the laying. It is the satisfying part, and it is genuinely skilled work, and it is not what separates a paver surface that lasts from one that starts dipping in year three.

What decides that is everything underneath: how deep the excavation went, what the base is made of, how many compactor passes it got and whether they happened in lifts or all at once at the end, and whether anything is holding the outside edge. All of it is invisible the moment the first paver goes down, which is exactly why it is the first thing a cheap quote reduces.

Two patios can look identical on handover day and be completely different products. One is still flat in fifteen years. The other develops a dip by the back door, an edge that wanders into the gravel, and joints wide enough to grow weeds in.

We only do pavers. That means we are not fitting your patio between a concrete pour and a block wall, and it means the base spec on your quote is a number we will explain rather than a line we copied from the last job.

Tucson ground, Tucson sun

Built for this ground and this sun

Caliche decides the excavation

The cemented layer under a lot of Tucson lots does not dig like soil and does not drain like soil. Where it is solid it is an excellent bearing surface. Where it is a broken layer over softer ground it holds water against your base and lets the surface move. It varies across a single lot, so we find out what you have before we quote a depth.

Colour is a temperature decision

A charcoal paver and a buff paver in the same position in July are two different experiences barefoot. Colour matters more than material for surface temperature, and it is the one thing you cannot change afterwards without replacing the surface. We will say so before you pick.

Monsoon runoff is what moves a base

Tucson gets much of its rain in a handful of intense storms. Water running across an unrestrained edge carries fines out from underneath, a little at a time, a few times a year. That is the mechanism behind most settled patios in this city, and it is designed out rather than fixed later.

We only do pavers

No concrete pours, no block walls, no landscape maintenance. One trade, one crew, and a base specification we can defend line by line.

Six steps, in this order

How a job runs

Setting a paver to the line with a rubber mallet
  1. 1Site visit

We walk the area, check the existing fall, look at where roof and irrigation water currently goes, and probe to find out what is under the surface. About an hour, no charge.

  2. 2Layout and material

Dimensions marked on the ground so you can stand in the actual footprint, then paver, colour, pattern and border chosen outdoors in daylight with the July surface temperature in mind.

  3. 3Fixed quote

Itemised, with excavation depth, base thickness, bedding, edge restraint and joint sand listed separately so you can compare it honestly against anyone else's number.

  4. 4Utilities and access

Blue stake locates before we dig. We also work out how pallets reach the back yard, which on a midtown lot with a narrow side gate changes both the schedule and the price.

  5. 5Install

Excavate, compact the subgrade, base in lifts, screed, lay, cut, restrain, sand, compact, top up. In that order, every time.

  6. 6Walkthrough

We walk it with you, run water across it if drainage was in scope so you can see where it goes, and leave joint sand for topping up through the first season.

Questions homeowners ask us

Common questions

What lasts longer, concrete or pavers?

Both last decades when they are built properly, so the more useful question is how each one fails. Concrete cracks, and the crack is permanent unless the slab is replaced. Pavers move, and a moved paver surface can be lifted, the base corrected and the same material relaid. On ground that shifts, that repairability is worth real money.

Do pavers increase home value?

A well built paver surface in good condition helps a property present and sell, though it rarely appears as a neat figure on an appraisal. Condition matters more than size. A settled, weed grown patio reads as deferred maintenance to a buyer, and a crisp one reads as a finished outdoor room.

Are pavers high maintenance?

No, but they are not zero maintenance either. Joint sand needs topping up in the first season or two and occasionally after that, and the surface benefits from an occasional wash. Sealing is optional rather than required. Compared with a lawn in this climate it is almost nothing.

Is it cheaper to pour a concrete patio or use pavers?

Concrete is cheaper to install, and plain broom finished concrete is the cheapest of the permanent options. Pavers cost more, mostly in labour. What you buy for the difference is a surface that can be lifted and relaid rather than patched or replaced. We do not pour concrete, so take that comparison as our honest read rather than a sales position.

How long do pavers last?

The pavers themselves commonly remain serviceable for decades and are usually replaced because someone wanted a different look. What wears out on a shorter cycle is the joint sand, any sealer and the edge restraint. If the base was built properly, the surface stays repairable indefinitely.

Do weeds grow through pavers?

Rarely up from below through a properly built base. What happens instead is windblown seed germinating in the joint sand, particularly where the sand has washed low. Keeping the joints full is most of the answer, and it is far cheaper than any of the alternatives.

Rough is fine. Paces across the yard will do.
